Evolution and Atheism:

"I later reverted to pantheism when I realized the shattering complexity and beauty of the living world. Then around the age of 16, I first understood that Darwinism provided an explanation big enough and eloquent enough to replace God. I have been an atheist ever since. It was hard to be an atheist before Darwin, the illusion of design is so overwhelming."  -Richard Dawkins, famous evolutionist

"Evolution is the greatest engine of atheism invented by the mind of man."  -Richard Dawkins

"As far as Christianity was concerned, the advent of the theory of evolution and the elimination of traditional teleological thinking was catastrophic.---Despite the attempt by liberal Christianity to disguise the point, no biblically derived religion can really be compromised with the fundamental assertion of Darwinian theory."      Evolution, A Theory in Crisis,  -Michael Denton

"More cases of loss of religious faith can be traced to the theory of evolution--- than anything else."        -Martin Lings, quoted in Christian Century  July, 1982.

"Darwinism removed the whole idea of God as the creator.. from rational discussion."    -Julian Huxley, famous biologist and statesman.

"Darwin pointed out that no supernatural designer was needed; since natural selection could account for any known-- life, there was no room for a supernatural agency in its evolution." -Francis Ayala, notable evolutionist

When asked what he believed:  Bertrand Russell, famous atheist said (paraphrase:) I believe in evolution which leads to greater and greater human beings.

Evolution is the foundational statement of the atheistic Humanist Manifesto.

"..God's role has been diminished over the eons.  First we had God making Adam and ...every creature with his hands....Then we had the God who sets evolution in motion. And then you don't even need that God, --the law giver-- because, if we take the ideas from cosmology seriously, then there are other places and other laws and life evolves where it can. So...now just...God, the master of ceremonies (who) does not actually play any role any more in the universe and no longer intervenes in any way."  -Daniel Dennett, Interview in Der Spiegel.

"Although many details remain to be worked out, it's already evident that all the objective phenomenon of the history of life can be explained by purely naturalistic factors... Man is the result of a purposeless and naturalistic... process that did not have him in mind."  -Gaylord Simpson, Noted paleontologist.

"Belief in evolution makes atheists of people. One can have a religious view that is compatible with evolution only if that religious view is indistinguishable from atheism."  -William Provine,  Professor at Cornell University

Intelligent Design:

"Proponents of ID say some forms of life are so complex they can only be explained by the activity of an unspecified 'intelligent designer,' who some say is God."  Nature

"It is wrong to say there is no way to bridge gaps except for intelligent design.   The whole history of science is that the gaps are always filled."  Re the bacteria flagellum: "I'm quite sure that within a decade or two we'll understand where it came from. To give up now is totally ridiculous."

-Bruce Alberts, President of the National Academy of Science.

"The basic problem I have theologically (with ID) is that God's activity in the world should be hidden."   "Primary revelation came through Jesus Christ, and I find it distasteful that additional divine finger prints should appear in nature."  -George Murphy, Lutheran theologian and physicist.

"I think the most impressive arguments for God are those supported by recent discoveries... argument for intelligent design is enormously stronger than when I first met it."  -Anthony Flew, famous atheist

"If one proceeds directly...in this matter, without being deflected by a fear of incurring the wrath of scientific opinion, one arrives at the conclusion that biomaterialists (life forms) with their amazing measure of order must be the outcome of intelligent design."   -Sir Fred Hoyle, atheist, and a prominent astrophysicist of the 20th century.

If I only examined the thumb, I would have to believe in an intelligent designer.      Paraphrase, Sir Isaac Newton.

"The argument for design has always been the best argument for the existence of God,  and when Darwin comes along, he pulls the rug out from that."  -Daniel Dennett, atheist

"Evolutionary biology has been so hugely unsuccessful as a scientific theory in accounting for the origin of life and the emergence of biological complexity, that it(doesn't)deserve a monopoly regardless of what state of formation ID has reached. ID is the only alternative to a mechanistic evolutionary biology."

-William Dembski, mathematician, philosopher, a leader of the ID movement.

"Observation and experiment demonstrate that law-like regularities explain much of nature. The same methods indicate that intelligence accounts for other aspects. It is ludicrous to forbid Fred Hoyle to notice what for all the world looks like design, or..say if he does..that he's no longer a scientist."   - Michael Behe biochemist and notable ID supporter.

"..there are no non-design explanations for the molecular machinery of life, only wishful speculation, just so stories"  "Science is an unrestricted search for the truth about nature based on reasoning from physical evidence.  By that light ID is indeed science."   -Ibid

False Charges Against Intelligent Design

Evolution is science and ID is only faith.

(Not only theists, but some notable atheists and agnostics accept ID, and on scientific grounds)

ID has no evidence, but merely attributes gaps in science to ID.

(Most of the numerous ID writings concern scientific observations. Almost everyone would agree that life seems designed. Some state this semblance is a delusion; others say the evidence shows it really was designed.)

ID is creation in disguise and was devised in recent years to get religion into schools.

(ID per se is not creation, and has been believed by most people, including King David, Socrates and Albert Einstein.)

Science by definition excludes supernatural considerations, therefore ID is not science.

(This arguable definition is self-serving for Darwinists.  Science should not avoid considering any reasonable explanations.)

Origins by ID cannot be observed or proven.

(Neither can evolution.)

ID and creationism are anti-science, and part of a war against science.

(No Way!  It is not science, but *Darwinism that is in dispute. Although a minority, thousands of scientists conclude it is poor science. Many of the greatest scientists have been proponents of ID.)

IDers do no research (wrong), nor have articles in main line, peer reviewed publications.

(ID research and articles are almost always banned from such venues, but there are notable exceptions.)

ID is religion, and therefore is not allowed in public schools.

(Although often motivated by religion, ID per se is not religion. It is a reasonable deduction from observations of nature. It has religious implications, as does evolution. Many Darwinists are atheists. What are their motivations?)

*Darwinism: The common descent of all life on earth from a single ancestor via undirected mutation and natural selection.

Problems about Fossil Evidence of Evolution:

“Since Paleontology does not shed any light on the genesis of the phyla, one must have recourse to the data drawn from comparative anatomy and embryology.”

– Pierre Grasse, Outstanding French Biologist, author of textbook on evolution.

“Fortunately there is a science which is able to observe the progress of evolution throughout the history of the earth. … Paleontology, which studies the fossil remains and is thus able to present organic evolution as a visible fact.”

– Richard Goldschmidt     (See the discrepancy between the first two quotes.)

“The fossil record with its abrupt transitions offers no support for gradual change.”

– Stephen Gould a leading evolutionist.  Harvard

“The Cambrian explosion is the most remarkable and puzzling event in the history of life.”

– Ibid

“The record of evolution is still surprisingly jerky and .. we now have even fewer examples of evolutionary transition than we had in Darwin’s time.

– David Raup, Field Museum of Natural History.”

“The family tree of the horse is beautiful and continuous only in the textbooks.”

– Herbert Nilsson

“I was trying to jam evidence of data into a pattern that would support conclusions about fossils that on closer inspection the fossils themselves would not sustain.  It is hard for me now to admit how tangled in that thicket I then was, but the thing about bias is how it does make one deaf to the cries of other evidence.”

– Donald Johanson.

“Nobody really places a great deal of faith in any human (phylogenetic) tree.”

Ibid  Ancestral Passions: The Leakey Families and the Quest for Humankind’s Beginning.”

Major problems for evolution in the fossil record

1  Out of order fossils, some millions of years before they supposedly evolved

2 Living fossils. Animals alive now but absent in the fossil record for many myrs*

3  Massive fossil burials, Dinosaur Monument, vast fish burials and many more.

4  Lack of missing fossil links.  Evolution predicted huge numbers of transitional

fossils but hardly any even alleged such forms have been found.

5  Cambrian Explosion. Sudden appearance of most phyla about 500 myrs.

       * Myrs (Millions of years) according to evolutionists

Distortions used by Dogmatic Evolutionists:

Dogmatic evolutionists have largely thwarted legislatures, courts and school boards from allowing open and balanced presentations of origins, and their influence has dominated the media. Quotations below were made by evolutionists and are from, That Their Words May Be Used Against Them by Henry Morris. Evolution and Darwinism are used interchangeably below.

1.  "Evolution ... is considered by all those entitled to judgement to be a fact for which no further proof is needed."  -Richard Goldshmidt   ("It seems at times as if many of our modern writers of evolution have had their views by some sort of revelation... "  -G. A. Kerkut)

2.  There is no evidence against evolution, so there is nothing to teach in opposition. (Scientific criticisms of evolution are ubiquitous.)

3.  Critics of evolution only present negative evidence. (When there are two opposing views, evidence against one would logically support the other.  Also, there is much positive evidence for creation.)

4.  Creationists are ignorant, dogmatic and liars. One needs an advanced degree in science to criticize evolution. (These insults are wrong at best.  Also, thousands of non-evolutionists have advanced degrees in science.)

5.  Disputes among evolutionists concern mechanisms and minor points, not evolution as a fact. (Evolutionist H.S. Lipson wrote, "To my mind, the whole theory does not stand up at all." Much evidence claimed to support evolution has been repudiated or criticized by other evolutionists.)

6.  A person cannot understand biology without evolution. (G.W. Harper wrote "... if all references to Darwinism suddenly disappeared, biology would remain substantially unchanged.")

7.  Those criticizing Darwinism are often labeled fundamentalists or creationists with hidden motives.  (Among notable critics of evolution are old earth theists, agnostics and atheists.)

8. "Explanations employing non-naturalistic events, whether or not explicit reference is made to a supernatural being, are outside the realm of science..."  -National Association of Biology Teachers. (Science means "to know," and teaching should not have to exclude any reasonable explanation.)

9.  Teaching creation in public schools is forbidden by the courts and constitution. (That is doubtful, but legal decisions, at least until the Dover case, allow criticism and alternative views to be presented.)

10.  Evolution is not against religion, and parents should not be concerned about it.  ("Darwinism removed the whole idea of God as the creator...from rational discussion." -Julian Huxley.  Evolution is the most frequent issue raised by students to noted youth speaker Josh McDowell.)

Some tactics of evolutionists are: excluding opposing views from classrooms, allowing disproved or very questionable evidences in textbooks, falsely accusing and vilifying their opponents, and trying to fire or silence teachers who openly question evolution.

General Quotes about Evolution:

"The fact that a theory so vague, so insufficiently verifiable, and so far from the criteria other- wise applied in 'hard' science has become a dogma can only be explained on sociological grounds."  Ludwig von Bertalanffy, Biologist

"A growing number of respectable scientists are defecting from the evolutionary camp...moreover for the most part these 'experts' have abandoned Darwinism not on the basis of religious faith or biblical persuasion, but on strictly scientific grounds, and in some instances regretfully."  Wolfgang Smith, Physicist

"I think the most impressive arguments {for God} are those supported by recent scientific discoveries...argument for intelligent design is enormously stronger than when I first met it."  Anthony Flew, well known atheist, 2004

"The influence of evolutionary theory on fields far removed from biology is one of the most spectacular examples in history of how a highly speculative idea for which there is no really hard scientific evidence can come to fashion the thinking of a whole society and dominate the outlook of an age."  Michael Denton, Evolution, A Theory In Crisis

"Evolutionary biology has been so hugely unsuccessful as a scientific theory in accounting for the origin of life and the emergence of biological complexity, that it does not deserve a monopoly, regardless of what state of formation Intelligent Design has reached.  I.D. is logically the only alternative to a mechanistic evolutionary biology."  William Dembski, 2002 I.D. symposium.

" I later reverted to pantheism when I realized the shattering complexity and beauty of the living world. Then, around the age of 16,  I first understood that Darwinism provided an explanation big enough and elegant enough to replace God. I have been an atheist ever since.  It was hard to be an atheist before Darwin; the illusion of living design is so overwhelming" Richard Dawkins

"One may find it hard to believe that all this is a result of natural selection, but as Charles Darwin wrote, 'the problem is not so much with our intellect as our imagination.'  These olympians of the animal world are the result of the miracle of evolution."  PBS, "Olympians of the Animal World"

"We now learn that the Theory of Evolution rests strictly on no proof at all.  In a word we are dealing with a religion."   Jean Francois Ravel, writer for the French Express.

"Our theory of evolution has become one which cannot be refuted by any conceivable observation. Ideas based on guesses or a few limited experiments have attained currency far beyond their validity."   Paul Ehrlich and L.C. Birch

Origin of Life:

"There is no known law of nature no process and no known sequence of events which can cause information to originate by itself in matter.”  -Dr. Verner Gitt, information theory expert

“We have a rough idea when it began on earth and some interesting theories about where, but the how part has everyone stumped. Nobody knows how chemicals organized themselves into the first living cell.”  -Paul Davies

“Many investigators feel uneasy about stating in public that the origin of life is a mystery, even though behind closed doors they freely admit they are baffled. There seem to be two reasons for this unease.  Firstly, they feel it opens the door to religious fundamentalists and the god of the gaps of pseudoscience. Secondly, they worry that a frank admission of ignorance will undermine funding, especially for the search for life in space. -Ibid

"In my opinion there is no basis in known chemistry for the belief that long sequences of reactions can organize spontaneously - and every reason to believe that they cannot.  The problem of achieving sufficient specificity, whether in aqueous solution or on the surface of a mineral, is so severe that the chance of closing a cycle of reactions as complex as the reverse citric acid cycle, for example, is negligible."  - Leslie Orgel

"It has become inordinately difficult to even begin to think of the construction of a naturalistic theory of the evolution of that first reproducing organism.  -Philosophy Now.

"One has only to contemplate the magnitude of this task to concede that the spontaneous origin of a living organism is impossible.  Yet here we are as a result, I believe, of spontaneous generation."  -George Wald

"The notion that not only the polymers but the operating program of a living cell could be arrived at by chance in a primordial soup here on earth is evidently nonsense of the highest order."  -Hoyle and Wickramasinghe

Bias:

Creationists would generally agree that people's world views and biases play a significant role in their acceptance of a theory of origins. It seems evolutionists do not

usually admit their own biases, but occasionally these are revealed, as seen below.

“Anything that we scientists can do to weaken the hold of religion should be done, and may in the end be our greatest contribution to civilization.” -Steven Weinberg,

Nobel Prize winner in Physics, N.Y. Times. 11/21/06.

“The whole enterprise of science is to explain life without invoking supernatural explanations. Intelligent design is not science. If it is religion, it should not be taught in science class.” -Orthodox Jewish scientist, (Name not obtained)

“Biologists must constantly keep in mind that what they see was not designed, but rather evolved.” -Francis Crick, Nobel prize winner, co-discoverer of the double helix

“I was trying to jam evidence of data into a pattern that would support conclusions about fossils that on closer inspection the fossils themselves do not sustain. It is hard for me to now admit how tangled I then was, but the thing about bias is how it does make one deaf to the cries of other evidence.” -Donald Johanson, Discoverer of “Lucy”

From Lucy Dethroned. Quoted in Apologetics Press

“We have a prior commitment to...materialism...Moreover that materialism is absolute, for we cannot allow a divine foot in the door.” Richard Lewontin. For the full quote see Stephen Jones creation quotes on the internet.

C.S. Lewis wrote that he could confirm its deception by the vigor with which evolution's defenders denied any alternative, “the fanatical and twisted attitude of its defenders.” Letter to Captain Acworth, leader of the Evolution Protest Movement.

“I will not accept that philosophically because I do not want to believe in God. Therefore I choose to believe that which I know is scientifically impossible;

spontaneous generation arising to evolution.”-George Wald, Nobel Biology prize winner Scientific American, August 1954, “The origin of Life.

” Creationists might consider applicable, what Frank Peretti wrote in Piercing the Darkness “How quickly men could accept the most outrageous of lies once the truth was removed from consideration.”

Evolutionary Hope and Nonsense:

"It is wrong to say there is no way to bridge gaps except for intelligent design.  The whole history of science is that gaps are always filled."  Re the bacterial flagellum:  "I'm quite sure that within a decade or two we shall understand where it came from." -Bruce Alberts, Presidnet of the National Academy of Science.  (Judge Jones of the Dover ID trial stated the flagellum problem had been solved.)

"The origin of a living organism by spontaneous generation is impossible.  But here we are as a result, I believe, of spontaneous generation." -George Wald, Nobel Laureate

"It should be possible in the next decade to look back 12 million years and see pretty well where (man) came from. I believe we shall see we are as much an accident of history as the many creatures here with us today and the many others now extinct."  -Richard Leakey, U.S. News and World Report, Nov.10, 1981

"The idea of irreducible complexity is nonsense."   -Kenneth Miller

 -Stephen Gould, Scientific American, Oct.1994.

"As scientific knowledge grows, religions predicated on these gaps will inevitably shrink as these gaps are closed."  -Charles Harper, Executive Director, Templeton Foundation.

(Religion and ID are not founded on gaps.  Evolutionists have faith that gaps will be filled by purely naturalistic answers.  These gaps include major dilemmas such as: entropy, irreducible complexity, origin of life, missing links and probabilities.)

Evolutionary Naturalism, a Religion and Faith

Those who support ID, even on the basis of scientific evidence commit "blasphemy."  Paraphrase, Francis Ayala, atheist and notable evolutionist

"..without any explanation of nature’s fine tuning, we will be hard pressed to answer the ID critic.  One might argue that the hope of a mathematically unique solution will emerge, is as faith based as ID.  If theory disagrees with observation, I'm pretty sure that physicists will go on searching for a natural explanation of the world.  -Leonard Suskind, New Scientist

"It is wrong to say there is no way to bridge gaps except for Intelligent Design. The whole history of science is that the gaps are always filled.  Re: the bacterial flagellum:  "I'm quite sure that within a decade or two we shall understand where it came from."  -Bruce Alberts, President of the National Associations of Science.  (Interestingly, Judge Jones of the Dover ID trial stated the flagellum problem had already been solved.)

"The origin of a living organism by spontaneous generation is impossible.  But here we are as a result, I believe, of spontaneous generation." -George Wald, Nobel Prize Biologist.

"It should be possible in the next decade to look back 12 Million years and see pretty well where (man) came from. I believe we shall see we are as much an accident of history as the many creatures here with us today, and the many others now extinct."  -Richard Leakey, U.S. News and World Report, Nov. 10, 1981. (Evolutionists seem as far from solving human origins as in 1981.

"The idea of irreducible complexity is nonsense.” -Kenneth Miller. (I doubt he really believes this)

It is often stated by evolutionists that the backward vertebrate retina demonstrates poor design.

(If true, rabbits need not fear an eagle hundreds of feet overhead.

The complexity of the blood clotting system with its has many cascading steps, shows bad design, since there is no fall back system, according to Elie Sheour, Skeptical Inquirer, Dec. 2005. (A wonderful, irreducibly complex system is illogically twisted to demonstrate poor design.)

Stones are more complex than bricks, therefore being complex does not prove design. -Ibid.  (A brick is a simpler geometric form, but shows by its specified complexity that it was intelligently designed.)

"The puzzle of the Cambrian explosion is put to rest by small skeletonized forms in the pre-cambrian found after 1950."-Jason Rosenhour, Skeptical Inquirer, Dec. 2005  ("Cambrian explosion..most remarkable and puzzling event in the history of life.”) by Stephen Gould, written decades later.

"Evolution is being proved by one confirming discovery after another in every biological discipline..” -Elie Sheour, Skeptical Inquirer, Dec. 2005. (Many alleged evidences for evolution have been truly rebutted: recapitulation, good mutations, vestigial structure, and many alleged missing links.)

"As scientific knowledge grows, religions predicated on gaps in scientific knowledge will invariably shrink as these gaps are closed."  -Charles Harper, Executive Director of the Tempelton Foundation.  (Religion and ID basically are not founded on gaps.  Evolution is largely based on faith that gaps in our knowledge will be filled by purely naturalistic answers. These gaps include major dilemmas including the second law of thermodynamics, irreducible complexity as in the bacterial flagellum, the origin of life, missing links and probability studies.  Evolution is a belief in events assumed to have occurred in unseen places, and/or the distant past, and faith in what might be found in the future.)

Lack of Openness and Objectivity Hinders Science

                  These quotes are by evolutionists

In an article related to dark matter, physicist Katherine Freese comments: "You remove one restriction from your theory and a whole new world opens up." The article writer stated, "It wouldn't be the first time scientists have let their theories mislead the interpretation of observations."  Science News 1/12/13/ pg. 20  (An example would be strict naturalism)

"In my view there is no objectivity in evolution science."  Milford Wolpoff, U. of Michigan paleoanthropologist

"The absence of fossil evidence for intermediate stages between major transitions in organic design, indeed our inability even in our imagination to construct functional intermediates in many cases has been a persistent nagging problem for gradual accounts of evolution." - Stephen Gould notable paleontologist (This is rarely stated widely to those in other branches of science or the general public.)

"The extreme rarity of transitional forms in the fossil record persists as the trade secret of paleontology.  The evolutionary trees that adorn our textbooks have data only at the tips and nodes of their branches. The rest is inference, however reasonable, not the evidence of fossils.  Paleontologists have paid an exorbitant price for Darwin's argument.  We fancy ourselves as the only true students of life's history, yet,to preserve our favored account of evolution by natural selection, we view our data as so bad that we never see the very process we profess to study.  -Ibid, Natural History, May 1977  (Gould is a founder of the punctuated equilibrium hypothesis to account for the lack of transitional fossils.)

"Stasis or non change of most fossil species during their lengthy geological life span was tacitly acknowledged by all paleontologists but never stated because prevailing theory treated stasis as un-interesting non-evidence for non-evolutin. -Ibid, Natural History, 1993, page 15

"We should reject as a matter of principle the substitution of intelligent design for the dialogue of chance-necessity.  We must conclude that there are presently no detailed Darwinian accounts of any biochemical or cellular systems, only a variety of wishful speculations." -Franklin Harold Professor Emeritus of Biochemistry, Colorado State University in The Way of the Cell: Molecular Organs, Organisms and the Order of Life.  (In other words, intelligent design must not be considered even if evoutionary explanations are imaginary.)

"We have spent much of the last century arguing to the lay public that we have proved the current biological paradigm (evolution).  Unfortunately very few of the scientific community seems critical of this indiscretion.  One would think that if all the evidence is so abundant, it would be quick and easy to falsify the null hypothesis (creation) put forward above." -International Journal of Molecular Science, 1/9/09 page 10
